HEAD AND NECK CANCER

The development of malignant tumours in or around the throat, nose, larynx, salivary glands, sinuses or mouth is termed as “Head and Neck cancer”. Head and neck cancers mostly are squamous cell carcinomas. If the cancer starts forming in the salivary glands, it will be classified as an adenocarcinoma. Five major types of head and neck cancer are there:

  • Nasal cavity and Paranasal Sinus Cancer
  • Laryngeal and Hypopharyngeal Cancer
  • Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer
  • Salivary Gland Cancer
  • Nasopharyngeal Cancer

Symptoms of such cancers are:

  • Constant sore throat.
  • A lump in the neck or head portion
  • Nasal congestion/obstruction
  • White or red patch in the mouth
  • Difficulty in breathing, chewing or swallowing
  • Fatigue

This type of cancer is most commonly found in men. Use of alcohol or tobacco increases the risk all the more. For diagnosis, biopsy is done where a sample of tissue is studied under a microscope. These cancers are generally curable if detected at an early stage. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination is usually suggested.

Cancerous tumour is removed during surgery along with a surrounding healthy tissue. Depending on the type of cancer, its stage and location, people may require more than 1 operation as well. Side effects can be there depending on the location and type of surgery. Common side effects may include impaired speech, loss of hearing or temporary/ permanent loss of normal voice. Post surgery, patients may even experience difficulty in swallowing or chewing. Swelling of the throat and mouth area is one of the other side effects. In this case, tracheostomy is done where a hole is created in the windpipe in order to make breathing a lot easier.
